Boulder, Colorado –
SERI plans to investigate e-Waste CRT processor “Sarah’s Trading” .
The Basel Action Network’s (BAN’s) allegations of outrageous mismanagement of CRTs by Sarah’s Trading of Doraville, Georgia again underscores the necessity of effective due diligence when selecting downstream processors for end-of-life electronics.
If proven true, the alleged mismanagement shows a complete disregard for workers’ health and safety, the environment, and state and federal law – those responsible should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Upstream recyclers also may face legal liability.
BAN also alleges that a Georgia electronics recycling company – Diversified Recycling LLC – has been sending CRTs from its Norcross, Georgia facility to Sarah’s Trading. Readers of BAN’s press release may draw the conclusion that this facility is R2 certified. This is not true. At no time has the Norcross facility been certified to the R2 Standard.
A Florida company, also named Diversified Recycling, has been R2 certified. It appears to have the same ownership as the Diversified Recycling in Georgia. SERI is conducting an investigation into this Florida company. The investigation is the result of questions being raised about the co-location of additional electronics recycling businesses at the company’s Orlando facility.
“Needless to say, SERI takes all of these issues seriously,” says John Lingelbach, SERI’s Executive Director. “CRTs, when mismanaged, pose a serious danger to worker health and safety and the environment. Effective downstream due diligence for materials such as CRTs is a core element of responsible recycling. And the co-location of companies, especially companies that appear to have the same ownership, can raise serious questions about the ultimate disposition of the equipment being handled.”
SERI will continue to investigate complaints and work to establish a global network of responsible recyclers. With an emphasis on quality, due diligence, safety, and protecting the environment, SERI’s quality programs will continue to raise the bar worldwide.
